Clovis Aubrey Burnette, Jr., 73, of Bedford, went above and beyond in every aspect of his life, demonstrating dedication to his family, community, and country until his passing at home on Sunday, October 13, 2024. Born in Roanoke, VA, on October 4, 1951, Aubrey—known for his quick wit and tireless work ethic—was the son of the late Clovis Aubrey “Sonny” Burnette, Sr., and Jean Francis Gentry Burnette. After the untimely loss of his mother, Aubrey was adopted and lovingly raised by his grandparents, Bruce and Lula Burnette, who surely had their hands full raising the lively character Aubrey grew to be. He was also preceded in death by his aunt, JoAnn Tester. A proud U.S. Marine, Aubrey served his country during the Vietnam War and never stopped serving in some capacity afterward. Whether it was as the long-standing owner of Bedford Heating and Cooling or Howell’s Well and Pump Service, Aubrey went the extra mile in his work, treating every job as a commitment to his community. He was deeply involved in local organizations, including the Bedford Marine Corps League and Bedford Moose Lodge #1897, and even found time to serve on the Bedford Board of Supervisors in the early 1980’s. His impact on the community he loved was undeniable. Aubrey is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 50 years, Nancy Lee Brown Burnette. Together, they built a big, lively family that Aubrey always held dear, including his two oldest sons, Tony Burnette (Norma) and Steven Burnette, their daughter Tiffany Hamilton, and sons Brian Burnette (Brittany), Kevin Burnette (Carrie), and Keith Burnette (Ena), and daughter-in-law Shannon Burnette. His legacy lives on through his grandchildren, Beth and Coty Carter, Brandon Burnette, Christa and Cody Suppe, Donald Burnette, Audrey Hamilton, Cody Boyd, Brianna Broscritto, Caleb Burnette, Logan Burnette, Avery Burnette, Kaiden Aubrey Burnette, and Landyn Lee Burnette, and his nine great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his uncle, Nathan Tester. The family will welcome friends for visitation on Thursday, October 17, 2024, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Burch-Messier Funeral Home, Walnut Street Chapel, 1235 Walnut Street, Bedford. A service honoring Aubrey’s life will be held on Friday, October 18, 2024, at 3:00 p.m. at the same location, with Rev. Danny Holdren officiating. Aubrey will be laid to rest with military honors at Beaver Dam Baptist Church Cemetery, where the U.S. Marine Corps will pay tribute to his service with one last salute to a man who gave so much to his country, community, and loved ones. Arrangements are being handled by Burch-Messier Funeral Home, Bedford, 540-586-7360.
