Barbara May (Franklin) Hassell passed peacefully in her sleep during the early morning hours on Saturday, September 28, 2019 during a stay at Oakwood Health and Rehabilitation Center in Bedford, Va. Barbara grew up in Radford, Va., the daughter of Robert and Helen Austin Franklin.  She attended the Radford schools and graduated from Radford College in 1957 with a BA Degree in Education.  On August 28th, 1958 Barbara married her soulmate of 50 years, Phillip Martin (Tom, Tommy) Hassell and together they raised two sons. Barbara in her youth was a member Grove Avenue United Methodist Church of Radford, Va. and later joined Grace Episcopal Church also in Radford. In more recent years, she and her family have been members of St. James Episcopal Church in Roanoke, Va. During the years the Hassells lived in Radford, Barbara taught English at Radford High School while serving as the sponsor for the student newspaper, The Acorn. Barabra was also among the first teachers serving in the inaugural classrooms at the John N Dalton Middle School. Inspired in the early 80’s by her own continuing education and participation in The Southwest Virginia Writing Project along with her student’s curosities surrounding writing and literature, she was very proud to launch and publish an enduring, award-winning, annual student literary magazine known as  Kaleidescope,  for students who had a particular interest in publication and writing. She loved working with students at all ages in the Radford School system for over 30 years. Barbara was an accomplished musician and served as the organist of her church for many years.  Along with her passion for music, she was a voracious reader of many great writers including Charles Dickens, Tennyson, Shakespeare, Whitman and Wolf.  She is also remembered as an avid collector of antiques which developed into the home furnishing business “Country Cupboard”  that she owned and operated from her and Tom’s country home in Belspring, Va. After retirement, Barbara enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, Dustin and Molly Hassell. She was their devoted fan, attending as many of their basketball games as possible, even traveling out of state to attend tournaments.  She continued to follow them throughout their college basketball careers at Roanoke College. In addition to her parents, Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Tom Hassell and her brother William Franklin.  She is survived by her son Paul Martin Hassell and wife, Suzan Stojakovich Hassell of Daleville, Va.;  her son, Phillip Howard Hassell and his wife, Debbie Vaden Hassell, of Troutville, Va.; and her grandchildren, William Dustin Hassell, of Boston, Ma. and Molly Leanna Hassell, of Troutville, Va. A funeral service will be conducted by the Reverend Susan Bentley at St. James Church on 4515 Delray Street, NW, Roanoke, Va.  24012,  Saturday, October 5, 2019 at 2 p.m.  The family will meet friends in the Church Parish Hall one hour before the service.  In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be given in Mrs. Hassell’s memory to the Rector’s Discretionary Fund of St. James Church.  Interment will follow at Trinity Cemetery.  Arrangements by Burch & Messier Funeral Home of Bedford, Va.

 

Joyce Anne Spradlin Williams, 75, of Huddleston, died Monday, September 23, 2019. She was born in Bedford, VA on March 16, 1944 a daughter of the late John Russell Spradlin and Willie Skinnell Spradlin. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Montgomery Lawrence Williams, Sr.; sons, Montgomery Williams, Jr. and Gregory Williams. She is survived by her sister, Emma Hollie; niece, Karen Russell and husband Bud; grandchildren, Brandon Williams, Candice Jackson and husband Chad, Taylor Burnett, Chelsea Richardson and husband Eric, Dakoda Williams; daughter-in-law, Kris Williams; step-grandchildren, Courtney Eubank, Zachary Abbott; great-grandchildren, Aiden, Bentlee, Annabelle, Wyatt, Logan, Micah, and Jaxon. Hugh Andrew Pritchard, 79, of Bedford, died Friday, September 20, 2019 after a short illness. Hugh was preceded in death by his parents, George and Anna. He is survived by a son, Wayne; and daughters, Teresa, Angela, and Jeannie; and multiple grandchildren.

Gail Elizabeth Dean, 45, of Montvale, died Wednesday, September 11, 2019. She was born in Roanoke, VA on November 3, 1973, a daughter of James Edward Dean and May Alphin Dean of Montvale. She was preceded in death by an uncle, William Bernard Alphin. She worked security at Walmart and was a member of Montvale Presbyterian Church.  Gail was a lifetime member of Montvale Rescue Squad. She was very actively involved in Relay for Life and volunteered with police work. In addition to her mother and father she is survived by a brother, Wayne Dean and wife Robin; special friend, Lisa Stewart; uncle, Richard “Dick” Alphin and wife Nancy; aunts, Carol Alphin, Jean Dawson; and cousins, Valeria Alphin, Jeff Alphin, Lynette Dawson. The family wishes to give a special thanks to the nurses on 10 South at Roanoke Memorial Hospital for their loving care to Gail. On September 10, 2019, Sabrina Rená Roarke, age 56, passed into her heavenly home, after a brief illness. Born on August 13, 1963, she is the beloved daughter of Patricia Owen. Preceding her in death was her father Tommy Roarke, and maternal grandparents, Billy and Edith Owen, and paternal grandparents, Eva and Willard Peake. Sabrina is survived by her daughter, Amanda Haskins (Brandon), her son, Thomas Haskins (Mary), and the son of her heart, Caleb Gunnell. Sabrina has two adored grandchildren, Edward and Alyssa Haskins. Left to mourn her passing are Sabrina’s siblings, Tony Roark (Susan), Phillip Roark (Robin), Deneatta Roarke, Robin Blair, and Roblyn Perkins (Brandon). She had 17 nieces and nephews, 9 great nieces and nephews, and numerous cousins and friends, who all loved BB for her radiant spirit and fierce heart. Sabrina was kind and nurturing to all of God’s creatures, loved dancing, and made instant friends everywhere. In her final days, she was surrounded by the love of many to lift her upwards to her next journey. Per her wishes, a private service will be held for the family. Family and friends will be received at 6300 Telegraph Rd Hurt VA at various times and again on Sunday September 15, 2019 between 1-3 and a celebration of her life will be scheduled at a later date. Jimmy Lee Waldron, 89, of Bedford, died Saturday, September 7, 2019. He was born in Thaxton, VA on January 31, 1930, a son of the late Evelyn Anderson Waldron Bowyer and James M. Bowyer. In addition to his mother and step-father he was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Hatter Waldron. He is survived by a brother, Elton Haney “Nitt” Waldron; Nieces, Betty Jean Burford, Tammy Small; nephew, Roger Lee Waldron; and friends, Darren and Kathryn Craig. Joyce Elizabeth Abbott Ruff, 77, of Goode, died Monday, September 2, 2019. She was born in Bedford, VA a daughter of the late Calvin Joseph Abbott and Wanda Fullen Abbott.  Joyce was an active member of Pisgah Presbyterian Church. She graduated from New London in 1960 and was an active alumnus assisting with the class reunions. She worked for the brokerage firm Thompson McKenna and also New London Academy as a secretary for 5 years. After her daughter was born, she took care of the books for the family business. Joyce loved her cats, babysat for her grandchildren, and cared for her parents so they would not have to go into a nursing home. She is survived by her husband, Richard Harvey Ruff; daughter, Jennifer Patterson; grandchildren, Jarred Patterson, Luke Patterson, Kayla Patterson; brother, Wayne Abbott and wife, Barbara; sister, Brenda Davis and husband, Perry, and numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m., on Saturday, September 7, 2019 at Peaks Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow in Peaks Church Community Cemetery. Daniel Richard Loyd went to be with his Heavenly Father on September 1, 2019.  His beloved Mom welcomed him home. Daniel had a huge heart. He made it his life’s goal to go out of his way for others and to always put himself last. He had an infectious smile that will never be forgotten. Family and friends were everything to him and he was continuously concerned with their needs. Daniel had a kind soul and he showed it daily to those he loved. To quote his lifelong friend Jason Overstreet, “Daniel Richard Loyd was an amazing human being”. He was a beloved husband to Brittany and the PROUDEST father to his sweet Ellie Grace. Patton Montgomery Overstreet, 74, of Bedford, died Sunday, September 1, 2019. He was born in Bedford County, on March 18, 1945 a son of the late Willie Henry Overstreet and Emmie Ruff Overstreet. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his siblings, Willie Overstreet and Ella Ruff. He loved spoiling the Sunday School kids at church with bubblegum, they all called him “the candy man”. He also enjoyed working on his wood work. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Carolyn Goff Overstreet; daughters, Lee Hyatt and husband Bill, Marsha Lauer and husband Paul; son, Patrick Overstreet and wife, Lacy; grandchildren, Sabrina and Sarah Hyatt, Adam Lauer, Catherine, Hunter, and Cole Overstreet, Madison, Christian, Morgan, and Maxwell Sims; great-grandchildren, Paxton Hyatt and Piper Berg; two brothers, Jackson and Joe Overstreet; and one sister, Rose Creasy.
